ChatGPT advertising glossary
The terms OpenAI's Ads Manager assumes you already know, defined in plain language: 30 entries covering the auction, targeting, and measurement of ChatGPT ad campaigns. Each definition is 40 to 60 words and written to stand alone.

Go tier
ChatGPT's lower-priced subscription tier. Go users see ads, like Free users; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers do not. The tier mix matters to advertisers because it shapes who is actually reachable in the auction at any given moment.
Ads Manager
OpenAI's self-serve console for buying ChatGPT ads. It opened to US advertisers in May 2026, replacing the invite-only pilot and its $50K minimum. You set bids, budgets, and creative here, and read delivery and conversion reporting. A few hundred dollars is enough to launch a first campaign.

Sponsored box
The labeled placement a ChatGPT ad occupies: a clearly marked sponsored card below the assistant's answer. The label is always present, so the paid placement is disclosed. Boxes are matched to the conversation's context, which is why creative that reads as a useful continuation outperforms a banner.

Self-serve
Buying ads directly through the Ads Manager rather than through a sales team or agency. OpenAI opened beta self-serve to US advertisers on May 5, 2026, with no minimum spend. It moved ChatGPT ads from a $50K invite-only pilot to a few-hundred-dollar entry point for any business.

Pilot program
The invite-only first phase of ChatGPT ads, running from February 2026, when OpenAI worked directly with a small group of advertisers on CPM buys. It carried a $50K minimum. Self-serve replaced it in May 2026. References to the pilot describe how the channel started, not how you buy today.

Excluded categories
The products and claims OpenAI does not allow in ChatGPT ads, set by its advertising policies. Restricted categories are common across ad platforms, and they sit alongside the rule that ads never alter the assistant's answer. Check OpenAI's current policy before building creative, since the rules tighten as the platform grows.
Advertiser API
OpenAI's programmatic interface for ChatGPT ads. It lets you create and manage campaigns, ad groups, and ads, and query performance insights, instead of clicking through the Ads Manager by hand. It is how optimization tools operate accounts at scale, and how reporting reaches your own systems.

Answer engine
A system that responds to a question with a direct answer rather than a list of links, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI overviews. Advertising inside answer engines is the category ChatGPT ads belong to, and the reason contextual placement, not keywords, is the unit of targeting.

Agentic commerce
Buying flows an AI assistant completes on a user's behalf, from finding a product to checking out, inside the conversation. It is the commerce counterpart to ads in ChatGPT, and the direction the channel is heading: ads that meet a buyer mid-decision, next to an assistant that can act on it.
Dynamic CTA
A call-to-action button on a ChatGPT ad, added to the Ads Manager in May 2026. It gives the sponsored box a clearer next step than copy alone. Like all ChatGPT creative, the button performs best when it reads as the useful continuation of the conversation rather than a generic prompt to click.

CPM
Cost per thousand impressions. On ChatGPT, the launch default was $60 and observed prices settled around $25 by mid-2026. CPM bidding pays for visibility regardless of clicks, so it suits advertisers whose click-through rate is already proven on the platform.
see: Learning phase · in practice: How much do ChatGPT ads cost in 2026?
Learning phase
The period after launch or a major edit when the platform's delivery model is still calibrating who should see your ad. Expect volatile CPMs and conversion counts for roughly the first 14 days. Judge nothing during the learning phase, and avoid edits that reset it.
see: CPM
CPC
Cost per click. You pay only when someone clicks your ad, which caps downside while click-through rates are unproven. On ChatGPT, CPC bids run $3 to $5 as of mid-2026. Most performance advertisers start here and move to CPM once their click-through rate is proven.

Ad relevance
How well the platform expects your ad to fit a given conversation. It weighs against your bid in the auction, so a more relevant ad can win a slot at a lower price. Relevance is the reason creative that reads as a useful continuation lowers your effective cost, well beyond any lift in click rate.

03 · Targeting · 4 terms
Contextual targeting
How ChatGPT ads are matched: the platform reads the conversation's topic and decides whether your ad fits. There is no keyword targeting. You can layer custom audiences and US geo on top, but the contextual match does the primary work. For search marketers the shift is real: you bid on conversations, not queries.

Custom audience
A list of people you upload to include or exclude from a campaign, by hashed email or phone number. OpenAI added custom audiences in May 2026. You layer them on top of the contextual match, so they narrow who sees a fitting ad rather than replacing context as the way ads are targeted.

Context category
The kind of conversation an ad is matched against, such as comparing software or planning a trip. Commercial-intent categories draw more bidders and clear higher than ambient chat. It is the closest thing to a keyword theme, except you win it with creative fit, not a bid on exact words.

Geo targeting
Limiting delivery to a location. ChatGPT added US geo targeting by state, designated market area, and ZIP code in May 2026. ZIP-level control is sharper than many platforms offer local advertisers by default. Like custom audiences, it narrows a contextual match rather than defining the audience on its own.

Conversion pixel
OpenAI's on-site tag that reports conversions back to the Ads Manager. Install it (or the server-side CAPI) before launching campaigns: conversion-optimized bidding, rolled out from June 2026, needs the signal, and without it you are buying clicks you can't value.
see: CAPI
CAPI
OpenAI's server-side Conversions API. It reports conversion events directly from your backend instead of the browser, so ad blockers and cookie loss don't drop the signal. Use it alongside the pixel; server events deduplicate against pixel events by event id.
see: Conversion pixel
Click-through rate
Clicks divided by impressions. It is the hinge in ChatGPT ad math, because it turns a CPM into an effective cost per click. At a $25 CPM, a 1% CTR is a $2.50 click and a 2% CTR is $1.25. Below roughly 0.8%, CPC bidding costs less than CPM.

CPA
Cost per acquisition: ad spend divided by conversions. It is the number that decides whether a channel works, because it meets your unit economics directly. A $125 CPA is good news for a $5,000 contract and bad news for a $40 order. Judge ChatGPT on your CPA, not its CPM.
see: Click-through rate · Conversion pixel · in practice: How much do ChatGPT ads cost in 2026?
Third-party measurement
Independent verification of ad performance by a party other than the platform selling the ads. OpenAI has said third-party measurement is coming and named technology partners, but a fully independent layer is still being built as of mid-2026. Until it lands, your own pixel and CAPI data is the source of truth.
see: CAPI · Incrementality · in practice: ChatGPT ads conversion tracking: pixel and CAPI setup
Incrementality
The conversions an ad actually caused, beyond what would have happened anyway. It is the hard question behind every channel: a $125 CPA only matters if those buyers would not have converted without the ad. Holdout tests, not last-click reports, are how you measure it. ChatGPT's tooling here is early.
see: CPA
Match rate
The share of a custom audience the platform can recognize after you upload it. Hashed emails and phones only match people the platform also knows, so a list of 10,000 might match far fewer. A low match rate shrinks the audience you thought you were buying, and quietly limits delivery.
see: Custom audience
Event id
A unique identifier you attach to a conversion so the pixel and CAPI versions of the same event deduplicate to one. Generate it once at the moment of conversion and send the same value from both paths. Skip it and a single purchase counts twice, halving your apparent CPA.

Conversion-optimized bidding
Bidding that lets the platform target your conversions rather than clicks or impressions. OpenAI rolled it out from June 2026. It needs a conversion signal to work, so install the pixel or CAPI first. Without that signal the system optimizes blind, buying clicks it cannot value.
see: Conversion pixel · CAPI · in practice: ChatGPT advertising: the complete guide
Pacing
How a campaign spends its budget across the day rather than all at once. Even pacing protects you from a single expensive hour draining the budget before higher-value conversations arrive. During the learning phase it can look erratic, then settles.
see: Learning phase
Creative fit
How well an ad reads as a useful continuation of the conversation it appears in. It is the lever you control that moves effective cost most. A fitting ad earns clicks and makes every bought impression work harder. A weak fit gets scrolled past, quietly raising your real cost per click.
see: Contextual targeting · in practice: ChatGPT advertising: the complete guide
Approval workflow
A step that holds an ad, bid, or budget change for human sign-off before it goes live. It is how agencies keep client accounts under control and how automated tools keep a person in the loop. You approve the move, and the system makes it.
